I have heard whispers that “Gucci is back” – I must have heard incorrectly because this is the worst collection that I have ever seen from this magnificent house. In the 1970’s Gucci was a hot luxury brand. It hit hard times starting in the 80’s but was brought back to life in the 90’s by the brilliant Tom Ford. He brought back the classic Gucci with a twist of sex appeal at a time the world was looking for the exact style he was designing for them.
Gucci was HOT once again! Back then I was just out of college when Gucci really starting hitting a hot streak. What a great time it was. I was in my very early 20’s hitting clubs in my Gucci, Prada Herve, or Versace. There were no lines or velvet ropes for me in those days, I just walked right in. It was a time of VIP rooms, bottle service, staying out all night and sleeping till 3. It was decadent for awhile, but then ( like most of us) I grew tired of the scene.
Once Tom Ford left it was obvious that Gucci was struggling with their image. Collections didn’t make sense, there wasn’t a story to tell or a clear design direction. It lost whatever Tom Ford brought back to the brand. Now as I look at the pieces that walked down the runway for Spring and the bags currently in stores, I am confused and clearly disappointed. Parts of the collection looks like it could have come right off the set of the second (and disturbing) Willy Wonka movie. It reminds me of what a hallucination might look like.
Dear God why?? Is this Mary Poppins’ bag? It hurts my eyes, and in my opinion they have bastardized the brand. Gucci is a classic, and this collection shows their desperation.
You may need to avert your eyes for the next couple of pieces – disaster!
TOM FORD ERA …
Tom Ford’s Gucci
He was a genius for the brand and they should get him back fast! The pieces were structured but had a studio 54 sex appeal to them. It wasn’t all gussied up with dragons on bags or any of such nonsense. It was pure clean lines, and it was the Gucci we all fell in love with in the 70’s with a modern twist. I long for the days of Tom Ford with Gucci
If I had to choose from this collection …
These are the only two bags I would even consider from the collection. They seem the most true to the brand. I understand design houses like Gucci trying to remake itself to stay relevant, but they should probably have gone back to where they began and looked for inspiration there.
Just one Girl’s opinion – gravitate to what you love Girls. XO
