Telling you who colors my hair is like a seasoned mom giving a new mom her list of tested babysitters. It’s simply not information we like to give out to everyone. Why? Because that will only make her more busy … and less accessible to me. So, yes, I’m being truly selfless by essentially giving you the keys to the castle … where the hair queen lives.
Once I moved here (Dallas) from New York I was in a total panic over who was going to color my hair, because only blondes understand that blonde is NOT as easy as it may look. A salon disaster can take months to correct. The wrong shade of blonde can throw off your entire complexion, and quite frankly, your mojo.
I got Rachel’s name from a reliable source, and I’ve been going to her for five years. As many of you girls know your relationship with your colorist is an important one, and I obviously love Rachel or I wouldn’t be doing this post. Meeting with her every six weeks is like meeting an old friend for coffee. What I love about Rachel, aside from the fact that she is unbelievably sassy, hysterical and has an accent that allows her to get away with a shit-load, is her ability to manage me as well as she manages my color. Let me tell you – she will give you what you ask for but she will also tell you if she thinks it’s a bad idea or if it will ruin your hair.
She’s been in this business for over 20 years, trained in England, was brought to New York to work and train with the best then moved to Dallas to head up the color and education teams at Fekkai – which is where I met her. Now, hair by charlie is where she calls home.
Her Specialty is balayage. She doesn’t use foils, she is like an artist strategically placing highlights for the most natural look.
I was nervous when she said she was switching salons. That can be a complete death sentence, but the salon where she moved is perfect. It’s located in the Dallas Design District, which is somewhat apropos given that they are essentially designing your look.
When you walk through the doors of this salon the environment is very relaxed, there is nothing pretentious about it. Which … is such a relief.
They all stay on top of their craft, keeping an open mind, and knowing where the trend is – it keeps it fresh. It’s nice to know you’re dealing with people who are in the moment and keeping your look modern. (That would be Charlie in the hat …)
Let’s just say – you don’t have to worry about walking in here and having someone put a cap on your head before pulling your hair through to highlight your hair. Oh, and by the way, if that ever happens to you … RUN!
The neighborhood surrounding the salon is an escape – filled with hidden gems. Before every appointment I go into Ascension (which is right next door) and get the most delicious latte around!
I would say … branch out.
P.S. By the way, this is NOT a paid for post. Let’s just say the latte tasted especially good today 🙂
